The Palms Golf Course is a tract that locals and visitors alike just love to play. A number of recent improvements to the course, including the installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system, allows the fairways and rough areas to be maintained in top-notch condition. . . all year round. New cart paths and the infusion of fresh, powdery white sand add to the beauty and playability of this classic resort course.
Originally designed by William Mitchell in 1959, the Palms was completely renovated by Karl Litten and Lorie Viola in 1996. It has hosted such outstanding tournaments as the Nike South Florida Classic and the Florida Open.
The Palms Course is an excellent venue for both higher and lower handicap golfers. There are 5 sets of tees, which allow every player to select the length of the course that is most appropriate for his or her round. If you want the greatest challenge, then select the Tournament Tees, which measure 6,931 yards, with a rating of 73.3 and a Slope of 128. Those desiring a more friendly length can choose one of the other sets of tees, which range from 5,431 to 6,586 yards.
The accommodating fairways make it easier to hit your tee shots in play. Hitting approach shots from the fairway makes it much more likely that you will find the generous putting surfaces in regulation. The oversized greens on this course give our golfers a greater margin for error when hitting their approach shots. Once on the 'dance floor', the Bermuda greens roll true and quick.
The Palms Course has a number of picturesque water hazards. As its name would indicate, the Palms features lovely native Palm trees throughout the course. It is most definitely a true Florida golf course and one which everybody should put on their 'must play' list of South Florida courses.
Here are three of the more distinctive holes on our Palms Course:
Nestled between two long Par 4's, the par 3, 7th hole doesn't offer a chance to relax. The spacious green slopes from back to front and is well-guarded by powdery bunkers on both sides. Club selection is most always affected by a prevailing tropical breeze. While this hole will occasionally relinquish birdies, most players are happy to accept par and move on.
A wide open fairway on the 9th hole allows players to 'grip it and rip it' on this long and hilly 437 yard, par 4. Players want to maximize their tee shots because the approach to this oversized green can be challenging. While a unique bunker design may give the appearance of a smiling face, most players are not amused at the prospects of hitting a wood or long iron into a green surrounded by sand.
The first feature that catches your eye of the 416 yard, par 4 10th hole is the gigantic waste bunker that runs the length of the fairway. Filled with white, coquina sand and native plants, the tenth takes on a desert-like feel. This straight hole can be deceptively long if your drive isn't accurate. While the fairway is plenty wide, players are advised to stay left to avoid having to play around a large cluster of trees that protects the approach from the right side. Sand bunkers flank both sides of this narrow but deep green.
The Palms Golf Course is a wonderful complement to Palm-Aire's other four golf courses and a must-play experience. Palms Scorecard Palms Hole by Hole Palms Slope / Ratings |
